Businessman Complains to Prez and PM: Ministry Voids Demand for $1.2 Million in Environmental Compensation

It appears that sometimes, in Armenia, it pays to complain to the top powers that be.

Armen Buniatyan was more than displeased when the Ministry of Nature Protection demanded that his company, Father and Son Buniatyans Ltd., pay 610 million AMD ($1.282 million) for damages to the environment.

The company, founded in 2008, is in the fish farming business.

Mr. Buniatyan lodged a complaint with Armenia’s president and prime minister.

The ministry then received an order from Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan to review the complaint and the fine.

As a result, the demand that the company pay the 610 million AMD was declared void. The decision to fine the company 300,000 AMD ($630) remained unchanged.
