Saro Hartounian: “This outrageous act of pure psychological terror must be exposed for what it is”

They arrested my brother Nareg today on false and unsubstantiated charges and ordered him jailed for 60 days. Without due process, no appeal, no bail allowed, this outrageous act of pure psychological terror must be exposed for what it is: a shameful act designed to intimidate Nareg Hartounian and my family into submitting to outright extortion.

This goes beyond Nareg and the Hartounians; the overwhelming corruption in Armenia's legal system and the state apparatus is a threat to the future of Armenia as well as the Diaspora. If such abuses of power can be imposed on one Diasporan Armenian with impunity, then all Diasporans who wish to help their homeland are at risk.

Nareg, myself and my family have decided to say "enough, no more!" to the rampant victimization and corruption in Armenia, which is now extended to Diasporans. We need as many voices as possible to send the message to those responsible that such violations of human rights cannot be tolerated.

@Emanuel Nimrud - if you think on one gets arrested for tax evasion in the US you are a dimwit. Try not paying the IRS a single dollar and see what they will do to you. This gentlemen may have thought he could get away from not paying several hundred thousand dollars in taxes. And if you read closely, it's more than just tax evasion that he was arrested for.

Avo, no one gets arrested because of tax invasion like they arrested Nareg. Corruption and extrosion became a way of life in Armenia. ...In the US law schools, they use Armenia as an example each time they want to discuss corruption....95% of tax issues all over the world are solved by a payment plan for a period of time.....It's a shame that our people will never, ever learn. That's why they are where they are in Armenia

Just because elite mega-corporations like Halliburton don't pay their fare share of the taxes in the US, don't expect the IRS to allow us the people to do the same... Just because Bernie Madoff was a philanthropist, that does not mean his business was clean... Nareg seems like a wonderful human-being who got caught up with bad business partners and it suffering as a result. If his business was clean, I am sure he will be out soon. I don't want to see stuff like this adversely impacting Armenia-diasporan relations. There are many repatriated Armenians living in the hayrenik without any problems whatsoever. Like anywhere else in the world, when in Armenia, be careful of who you associate with and more importantly - don't feel entitled just because you are a diasporan. Most self-engrossed disporans treat Armenia as if its an extension of their egos or their diasporan communities. No, Armenia is a normal nation full of all kinds of people.

Any spiurkahay, naive enough to trust Armenian authorities and invest in Armenia, deserves to be jailed for lot longer then 60 days. Don't you people learn from other's mistakes??????????

Ministry of Diaspora is this the way you encourage foreign investment in Armenia? What happens to all the oligarchs that don't pay taxes? Why are they not in prison?????
