Suspect Arrested in Mutilation Murder of Russian Soldier in Gyumri

A suspect has been arrested in the murder of Dimitry Yalpayev, a Russian soldier attached to the 102nd Russian army base in Gyumri, whose mutilated body was discovered on April 22 in Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city.

The suspect, whose identity hasn’t been published by law enforcement, is said to have a history of psychological problems when serving in Armenia’s military.

Armenia’s Investigative Committee says that the suspect, on several occasions, engaged in self-mutilation. He was later transferred to a defense ministry hospital’s psychiatric ward.

A psychiatric evaluation found the suspect unfit for military service, and he was discharged.
