Flames from Defective Car Caused Artavan Fire, Says Investigative Committee

Armenia’s Investigative Committee (IC) today announced that the recent fire in the Vayots Dzor village of Artavan was caused by flames emanating from an unlicensed and defective automobile.

The IC says the owner of the vehicle had driven it to a nearby field to mow hay and when he pushed down on the accelerator, flames shot out of the muffler.

The car owner has been charged with Article 186 (destruction or damage inflicted to property by negligence) and Article 297 (Obliteration or damage of a forest) of Armenia’s Criminal Code.

300 hectares of the Saravan branch of the Vayots Dzor Forest Enterprise are said to have been destroyed due to the fire.
