Nairit Chemical Pant Fire: Ministry Claims No Threat to Nearby Residents or Environment
Armenia’s Minister of Emergency Situations Daniel Tonoyan issued a statement claiming that the fire at Yerevan’s Nairit chemical plant is under control and that six water tankers belonging to Sanitek (the company responsible for garbage collection in the Armenian capital) have been deployed to the site.
113 firefighters are fighting the blaze which erupted earlier today at the plant, spewing huge clouds of black smoke over Yerevan.
A ministry press release says that an air quality monitoring group has found no traces of elements dangerous to humans in the samples taken.
The ministry adds that the Nairit plant has been constructed in such a way to minimize any “negative impact of the accident” on nearby residents and the environment.
