On average, in 2016, a citizen of Armenia spent AMD 43,978 per month; 42.1% on food.

This is one of the findings in the 2016 Social Snapshot and Poverty in Armenia report published by the National Statistical Service (NSS).

34.4% was spent on various services (bank, utilities, health, transportation, etc.), and 19.9% was spent on non-comestibles. The tiny remainder was spent on tobacco and alcoholic beverages.

The average amount being spent has risen in recent years. It was 40,770 drams in 2014, and 42,867 drams in 2015.

5,184 households were selected for 2016 survey, of which 3 240 were from urban, and 1 944- from rural communities.

The NSS break down the population of Armenia into ten monetary income decile groups. (Group1 has the lowest income; Group 10 the highest)

For poor households the relative share of expenditures on food in total consumption expenditures is larger than the country average.

In 2016, those in the First Decile Group spent, on average, 60.2% of total consumption on food as opposed to 31.1% of those in the Tenth Decile Group.

Those in the First Decile Group spent less on alcoholic beverages (24.1%) than those in the Tenth Decile Group (44.6%).

Those in the Tenth Decile Group also spent 21.7% of total consumption on non-food products, almost twice as much as those in the First Decile Group (12.2%).

Finally, the wealthiest Armenians spent more on services (44.6%) than those with the lowest incomes (24.1%).
