Ilham Aliyev Calls for Snap Presidential Election

A snap presidential election is scheduled in Azerbaijan on April 11, 2018.

According to AzerTac, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev ordered the election “guided by Item 1 of Article 101 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in accordance with Article 179 of the Election Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.”

The news site offers no other reason for the snap election. The next regularly slated presidential election was scheduled for October 17, 2018.

According to changes made to the Azerbaijani constitution in the fall of 2016, the country’s president would be elected for a seven-year term instead of the current five.

Ilham Aliyev, the only announced presidential candidate so far, has ruled Azerbaijani since 2003.

This is his fourth presidential nomination. A 2009 constitutional amendment removes any limit as to how many times an individual can be nominated for president.
