Media Organizations Call on Yerevan Mayor to Discipline His Press Secretary

Several media and journalism organizations in Armenia have issued a public statement calling on Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan to discipline his Public Affairs Director, Artour Gevorgyan, for hindering the work of reporters from Radio Liberty and A1+ TV.

The nine organizations that signed the statement say that the reporters in question had gone to the municipal building on February 19 at the invitation of Zaruhie Postanjyan, leader of the Yerkir Tsirani political faction. (The faction has three members in 65-member Yerevan Council of Elders)

Postanjyan wanted to talk to the reporters about various problems at the municipality. In particular, she wanted to talk about the fact that the faction’s official car hasn’t been allowed entrance to the municipal building’s garage ever since the February 13 fracas that took place in the building.

The signatory organizations say that Gevorgyan didn’t allow Postanjyan to converse with reporters in the building and called in police to escort them out.

They say that the police cited some internal regulations not familiar to the reporters or municipal council members.

The organizations are also demanding that the Yerevan Municipal Council prohibits all regulations allowing for the unsubstantiated restriction of the work of reporters and news outlets in the building.

The signatory organizations: Freedom of Speech Defense Committee, Yerevan Press Club, Media initiatives Center, Asparez Reporters’ Club, Diverse Information Institute-Armenia, Public Press Club, Reporters for the Future, Reporters for Human Rights, Goris Media Club.
