Government Proposes Medical Center for Armenia's Incarcerated

Armenian Minister of Health Davit Harutyunyan today submitted a proposal to create a state non-profit medical center that would focus on providing adequate medical care for those incarcerated in the country’s jails and prisons.

“I am proposing that an agency attached to the health ministry be created that would offer medical services. This would make it possible to raise the level of trust and, most importantly, would ensure the independence of health care from the correctional system,” Harutyunyan said.

The proposal says raising the level of medical care and services in Armenia’s correctional facilities is high on the list of government’s priorities and that immediate solutions are required.
