Ilham Aliyev Wins Fourth Term as Azerbaijani President

Preliminary vote results released by Azerbaijan’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) show that Ilham Aliyev has been re-elected president by winning 86% of the ballots cast in yesterday’s snap election.

This will be Aliyev’s fourth term as president of Azerbaijan.

"I am grateful to my people for voting for our achievements and success," Aliyev said on state television, soon after the election commission announced the partial results. "People voted for stability, security, and development."

Azerbaijan’s main opposition parties boycotted the election.

Voter turnout was 74.51% according to the CEC.

900 international observers were on hand to monitor the voting, including those from the OSCE and the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).

Human Rights Watch (HRW) described the election as not providing “a viable choice” for the voters.
