Armenian Church Leaders Discuss Protests with Sargsyan; Urge Patience and Calm

The website of Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan has published a release saying that Sargsyan has meet with Catholicos Garegin II and Catholicos Aram I and that the three discussed the wave of protests that have taken place in Yerevan and elsewhere since Sargsyan was elected on April 17.

The press release reads: “Regarding as natural that any country can experience discontent, demands and concerns, the catholicoi stressed that such expressions of protest must exclusively be civilized in nature, respecting constitutional law and order.”

The release also says that the catholicoi “gave thanks that the use of force and clashes have been absent.”

“We pray that the situation gradually calms down, and that people get back to building the homeland and ensuring the security of the country. Yes, we all face hardships in our life, as well as challenges. We can only overcome those challenges with national unity and cohesion," Catholicos Garegin II is quoted to have said.

The two church leaders also referred to the upcoming April 24 anniversary of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, calling on people to draw lessons from history and “keep our country safe from tragedies and losses”.

Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II remarked, “We have Artsakh. We have young sons of Armenia serving on our homeland’s borders, whose safety, we know Mr. Prime Minster, is a constant issue of concern for you. My God keep our people in love and peace. Thisis our wish and prayer.”

The press release says that Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia argued that the developments taking place in Armenia, in which young people are participating, are creating an atmosphere of uncertainty that damages our people and our country’s image in the world.

“In the end, it will take months to overcome the consequences of these demonstrations and the damage done. In other words, the country can be damaged. We must tell the protesters that this is the homeland of us all; we are one family. Yes, there will be problems and hardships, but we must discuss them around the table, with mutual understanding, and not in the streets,” Catholicos Aram I is quoted as saying.
