Police to Pashinyan: "Stop Rally or Else"

Yerevan police have demanded that Yelk Alliance MP Nikol Pashinyan halt a protest rally now underway in the Nork #7 district of the Armenian capital.

Police argue that the rally is illegal and that Pashinyan must leave the area.

The police say that Pashinyan and other representatives of the movements who have organized the rallies and marches seeking to force the resignation of newly-elected Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan have violated several clauses of the “Law on Rallies”.

Police say the rally organizers must inform authorities in advance regarding the rally’s venue, how many people are expected, the equipment to be used, the route to be followed if a march is planned, etc.

The police also accuse Pashinyan and others of directing protesters to block streets and public transportation, as well as access to government buildings.

The police also claim that the protests in Yerevan and elsewhere in the country have created an atmosphere of hate and intolerance, leading to clashes amongst civilians.

The police statement goes on to say that the protest rallies are infringing the constitutional rights of others and threaten national and public safety.

The police say they will take all appropriate measures to disperse the protesters if necessary.
