Armenia: Acting Prime Minister Calls for “Restoration of Law and Order”

Karapetyan praises the police for its professionalism and tolerance

Acting Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan convened a special session of the Security Council today to review recent developments in the country and their impact on its security.

Karapetyan thanked the country’s armed forces for remaining alert during the past two weeks of civil unrest in Armenia, stating that there should be no doubt the country’s defenses areas prepared as ever for any eventuality.

Addressing Acting Minister of Defense Vigen Sargsyan, Karapetyan said that given recent reports that Azerbaijan was deploying additional troops and equipment along the Line of Contact it would be prudent to “lessen that tension”.

Karapetyan told the cabinet that he had discussed the matter with Artsakh President Bako Sahakyan, and that the two Armenian states are prepared to respond in kind to any Azerbaijani violation of the ceasefire.

Addressing Armenia Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan, Karapetyan said the police had exhibited a “high degree of professionalism and its ability to maintain public order” over the past two weeks.

“I thank all police officers for their dedication, for their work and tolerance,” Karapetyan said, adding that while it is important for the police to exhibit tolerance during rallies and demonstrations, it’s equally important to exhibit alertness from a public order viewpoint.

“Starting today, public law and order must be restored,” Karapetyan said.

Armenia needs to restore a proper border with Russia and stop allowing Kremlin kleptocrats to call the shots in Yerevan. The Kremlin's abysmal foreign policy has led to economic ruin for Russians; there is absolutely no excuse for tolerating any form of Russian interference within Armenia itself. It is time for a competent government to emerge consisting of people of integrity, not corrupt vassals of Putin or Sechin or any other Moscow potentate.
