Residents of Norakert, a community in Armenia’s Armavir Province, don’t like the way Mayor Shahen Karapetyan has been running things for the past sixteen years and today closed the road passing through their town.
Some 700 residents have already signed a petition against the mayor and the town council.
Avetik Sahakyan says residents have frequently asked town officials to act in a more transparent manner and make Norakert’s financial books accessible.
Sahakyan says that residents have heard rumors that communal property has been sold illegally and without their prior approval.
Residents are demanding to see the budgetary books for the past ten years.
If their demands aren’t met, residents say they will call for the mayor and town council to resign.
