Shahumyan High School Teachers Unhappy with Principal; Demand She Resign

High school teachers in Shahumyan, a community in Armavir Province, are not happy with the way Principal Karineh Manukyan is running things and demonstrated in the school yard today to voice their concerns.

They are calling for Manukyan’s resignation, claiming that she's abused her office and acted in an unbecoming manner.

But Manukyan never heard what the teachers had to say since she already had left the building. No one know where she had gone.

Manukyan took over as acting school principal in December 2017 when Hamest Manukyan resigned. A disputed election in February of this year failed to elect Karineh Manukyan the school’s permanent principal so another election was held in April. That too was disputed.

But given that the vote was split down the middle, four in favor and four against Karineh Manukyan, a deputy prime minister at the time, appointed her principal. Teachers sent a petition to the national government in Yerevan, requesting that the appointment be reversed. It wasn’t.

The fact that Shahumyan Mayor Harutyun Navasardyan supports Manukyan further annoys the teachers, who say that they are the ones to must deal with the principal on a daily basis and thus should decide who that person is.

Navasardyan has called for a meeting tomorrow with residents in the school auditorium to discuss the impasse.

Shoushan Karapetyan, who teaches at the school, says that’s all well and good, but that the teachers should have the final say.

Shahumyan resident Anahit Hovhannisyan, who lives near the school told Hetq that she supports the teachers.

“I have no friends teaching at the school or any children attending it. I’m on the side of what’s right. What’s happening at the school is unjust. Money shouldn’t be taken for an outside principal to be brought in,” says Hovhannisyan.

The teachers will demonstrate tomorrow as well.
