Etchmiadzin: Protesters Continue to Demand Resignation of Mayor

Protesters in Etchmiadzin continue to call for Mayor Karen Grigoryan to resign.

Those opposed to Grigoryan gathered in the town’s Komitas Square and then marched on the house of retired Lieutenant-General Manvel Grigoryan, a deputy in the parliament and the mayor’s father.

After shouting “Manvel, get out” and “Karen, get out”, the marchers then went to the Saint Hripsimeh Church, urging support for “the pontiff”. (The reference is to Catholicos Garegin II. Several demonstrations demanding his resignation have occurred in Yerevan.)

The few police on the scene remained on the sidelines.

Protesters say they are determined to ramp up the pressure until Grigoryan, Etchmiadzin’s mayor since 2008, resigns.

The mayor’s supporters are planning a counter-demonstration today.
