Yerevan Gold Market Vendors Protest: Demand Rents be Cut

Vendors at Yerevan’s “Gold Market” protested today outside the glass-enclosed building on Khorenatsi Street and demanded that stall rents be decreased.

They say that fees have gone up 40% as of January and accused market Director Vagharsh Abrahamy of lying when he told reporters that the rents had been dropped by 20%.

The protesters say their stall fees have gone up because the owners of the present gold market are building a new market nearby and need the money.

One vendor, Shoushan, told Hetq that she pays 35,000 drams a month for her stall and that the director hasn’t made good on his promise to slash the fee by 20%. She does say that some vendors have seen their fees cut.

Vendors also complain that their business has suffered because of the ongoing construction that has impeded foot traffic in the area.

Another vendor says he hasn’t paid his stall fee since January, when it increased to 50,000 drams. “We complained constantly that the entryway was blocked due to the construction and that potential customers thought the place was closed,” he told Hetq.
