Haghartzin Residents Block Armenia-Georgia Highway; Demand Access to Forest to Cut Down Trees
Residents of Haghartzin and surrounding villages today blocked the M4 highway linking Armenia and Georgia and demanded that the government allow them to enter Dilijan National Park to cut down trees to be used for fuel.
Scuffles broke out when a truck driver from Georgia got out of his cab and demanded that he be allowed to pass.
Traffic on the main artery remained blocked, and the demonstrators say they will not leave until the matter is resolved.
Demonstrators advised drivers to use an alternate route.
Today’s protest comes five days after local residents attacked several environmental activists who were patrolling the park to prevent illegal tree felling.
