Armenian Education Minister Tells Tavush Principals to Depoliticize Their Schools

At a meeting today in the offices of the Tavush Provincial Government, Minister of Education and Science Arayik Harutyunyan told educators and school administrators to expect a number of changes to the sector, including the way school principals are selected and the role of school governing councils.

“Up till now, the councils operated to serve the interests of the authorities and not to fulfill the functions they’re responsible for,” Harutyunyan told those present.

The minister stressed to principals in the audience that schools in the country must be free of politics.

Harutyunyan told principals that the government would be revising its school subsidy formula. Henceforth, the amount of government financing to each school would be based not only on enrollment data but on the number of classes as well.
