Yerevan: Court Lifts Pre-Trial Detention for 6 Defendants in 2015 Nork Armed Group Case

A Yerevan court today released six people, arrested on November 25, 2015 in Yerevan’s Nork district and charged with illegal arms possession and conspiracy to commit a series of serious crimes in Armenia, from pre-trial detention.

MPs Ararat Zurabyan and Napoleon Azizyan (Tsarukyan Faction) and MP Lena Nazaryan (Yelk Faction) had requested that the court change the mode of detention, offering their personal assurances that the defendants would not flee.

On that day, Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) reported that it had raided a private house in Nork, arresting nine individuals.

The NSS claimed that it had uncovered it maps of Yerevan and Gyumri in the raid.

The NSS reported that the alleged mastermind of the conspiracy was Artour Vardanyan, a citizen of Armenia living in Spain since 1997. According to the NSS, Vardanyan returned to Yerevan in April of 2015 and recruited 19 individuals, mostly unemployed, in his group.

The six released today are Vladimir Arakelyan, Khachik Avetisyan, Ara Poghosyan, Artour Yeghiazaryan, Vaghinak Stepanyan and Haroutyun Salnazaryan.
