Police Uncover Corruption Totaling AMD 12.6 Million at Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography
Police in Armenia reported today that they have uncovered several instances of corruption at the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography amounting to AMD 12.5 million.
In two of the cases, wages were paid to employees on the books who never provided the services they were contracted to perform.
In one case, the institute hired a person to teach English, and was granted the title of international cooperation pro-rector. Police claim the person never taught a day of class but was paid AMD 3.5 million.
This person then hired his wife and nephew, to the post of department managers. The two failed to show up for work and were then issued maternity leave. Nevertheless, they were paid AMD 900,000 in wages.
In a third case, police allege that starting in January 2016 the institute signed an unwarranted car leasing contract with the wife of one of the pro-rectors. The car was used by the pro-rector for personal use.
The institute spent AMD 8.150 million AMD to pay the lease and to pay the chauffeur’s salary.
Criminal cases have been launched in all three instances.
