Armenian President Sarkissian Pays Respects to March 1, 2008 Victims

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian laid a wreath at Yerevan’s Myasnikyan Square today to commemorate those who died in post-election violence in the Armenian capital on March 1-2, 2008.

Eight civilians and two police officers were killed in the unrest following presidential elections two weeks earlier that were criticized as having significant problems and electoral irregularities.

On the afternoon of March 1, 2008, thousands of protesters gathered in the square where Nikol Pashinyan, now the Armenian prime minister, addressed them and charged the government of outgoing President Robert Kocharyan of election fraud and suppressing freedom of speech and assembly

Prime Minister Pashinyan has announced a march in Yerevan to remember those who died. The march will kick off in Freedom Square in central Yerevan and proceed to Myasnikyan Square.
