Armenian Citizen Arrested in Tbilisi for U.S. Bank Fraud

A decade-long manhunt ended last Saturday when foreign and U.S. officials arrested Karen Nikolyan, a citizen of Armenia, at Tbilisi International Airport in Georgia.

According to Colorado’s The Sentinel newspaper, Nikolyan, 35, was originally indicted on 10 counts of bank fraud and fled in 2008 before Denver’s U.S. District court could sentence him.

Over the course of one month in spring 2007, Nikolyan defrauded seven different banks for more than $600,000, according to prosecutors.

Nikolyan was apprehended at the Tbilisi airport after flying from Istanbul, Turkey, according to prosecutors.

He is currently in custody in Georgia awaiting extradition to Colorado.
