Armenian Human Rights Defender Highlights Unsanitary Conditions in Public Schools and Kindergartens

Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan today issued a scathing report about the condition of toilets and bathing facilities in the country’s public schools and kindergartens.

At a press conference, Tatoyan said that inspections of 121 schools and 80 kindergartens in May and June of last year revealed a number of troubling issues.

  • Only 8 of the 121 schools and 2 of the 80 kindergartens were accessible to those with mobility-impairments.
  • Toilets were located in open stalls
  • 71% of the school bathrooms did not provide liquid soap
  • Only 7% of school bathrooms provided paper towels or hand dryers
  • 86% of school bathrooms didn’t have hot water. Only 44% of kindergartens had hot water.
  • 61% of school children mostly drank water from the tap, using their hands or a shared cup.
  • 35% of schools lacked boys’ and girls’ bathrooms on each floor.
  • School staffs aren’t properly informed about statewide sanitary regulations
  • Schools aren’t collecting data on water and sanitation accessibility.

“During our spot checks, children told us that they avoided using the bathrooms because they were so unsanitary. We visited many schools where the bathrooms were outside. Then, there were the inexcusable cases where toilets were in open stalls or without doors,” Tatoyan said.
