Pashinyan Calls for Greater Participation of Women in Government and Business; Says This Doesn't Undermine Traditional Armenian Family

Attending the opening of the World Committee Meeting of the World Association of Women Entrepreneurs (FCEM) in Yerevan today, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the economic revolution he envisages for the country will not succeed if the government fails to spur women business entrepreneurs.

Pashinyan continued by saying that Armenia’s 2018 “Velvet Revolution” wouldn’t have taken place without the mass participation of women.

He then claimed that the role of women and the degree of their participation in society has noticeably risen during the past year.

Pashinyan said that many sectors in Armenia need a “woman’s care”, listing state governance and the service industry as examples.

“Overall, I believe that our country needs the care of women, especially when we see disorganization and slovenliness in corners of the homeland.”

Pashinyan said his government seeks to increase the role and participation of women in all aspects of the government and society.

He was quick to add that none of this contradicts “our national perceptions of the traditional family.”

“I want to call on all the woman of Armenia to take a step for the economic revolution because I believe that women are more efficient and rational when it comes to business,” Pashinyan said, adding that women are less likely to fall prey to corruption than men.

The FCEM is non-profit, non-governmental, non-political and non-sectarian organization whose activities at the national and international level are aimed at promoting women’s entrepreneurial initiatives and reinforcing national associations of women business owners. FCEM is the acronym for 'Les Femmes Chefs d'Entreprises Mondiales', or World Association of Women Entrepreneurs. Today, the FCEM network includes over 60 countries across five continents.
