Armenians in Georgia Complain that Turkish Embassy and Tbilisi Authorities Violated Their Right to Hold April 24 Genocide Comemoration

Representatives of the Armenian community in Georgia have issued a public letter of protest, claiming that community members were deprived of organizing a 1915 Genocide commemoration on a site adjacent to the Turkish Embassy in Tbilisi.

The letter says that on April 24, members of the Armenian community gathered at the site to commemorate the Genocide, as they have done for many years, but were surprised to see that the Turkish Embassy had already organized another event, thus depriving Armenians of their legal right to hold their commemoration and protest rally.

In the letter, addressed to the Georgian government and the Turkish Embassy, Armenian community representatives say they had informed local Tbilisi authorities in advance of the Genocide commemoration and that their rights, as enshrined in the Georgian Constitution, had been violated.

The letter calls on the Georgian government and president to take immediate steps to rectify the issue.

It also calls on the Turkish Embassy to issue a public apology to the citizens of Georgia and to refrain from such discriminatory actions in the future.
