Armenian Supreme Judicial Council Acting Chairman Gevorg Danielyan Resigns

Supreme Judicial Council Acting Chairman Gevorg Danielyan resigned today.

In a statement released to the press, Danielyan says he hopes his resignation will allow for a revamping of the council that will have the necessary public support to enact much needed judicial reforms.

Danielyan’s resignation, coupled with today’s resignation of Minister of Justice Artak Zeynalyan, appears to signal the start of a major shake-up of the country’s much maligned judicial sector.

Danielyan says that he’ll be engaged in scientific-educational work and may offer private legal services.

On May 24, 2019, Danielyan was appointed to temporarily replace Gagik Harutyunyan as Supreme Judicial Council chairman.

The Supreme Judicial Council, an independent state body comprised of ten members, is tasked with guaranteeing the independence of courts and judges in Armenia.

Five members of the Supreme Judicial Council are elected by the General Assembly of Judges, another five members — by the National Assembly.
