Armenian Constitutional Court Judges Say They Will Not Respond to "Political" Criticism

In response to criticism that Armenia’s Constitutional Court it is less than impartial and needs a major shakeup, the judges who sit on the highest court in the country declared today that they would not respond, given their vow to refrain from making public political comments.

“Most of the views voiced of late about the Constitutional Court are political in nature. Thus, we will not respond, taking into account the obligation of a Constitutional Court judge to exhibit political neutrality in public appearances and elsewhere,” reads the judges’ statement.

The judges make it clear that the court is the final arbiter regarding the interpretation of constitutional norms and that the court cannot be swayed by public opinion.

“Considering that the legal questions raised about the constitution and the Constitutional Court can, according to constitutional law, become an object of review by the Constituional Court, we will refrain from expressing an opinion on them publicly," the statement reads.
