Minister Papikyan: Armenia Remains Committed to Safe Use of Nuclear Energy

During his speech yesterday at the plenary session at the 63rd General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Armenian Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Suren Papikyan stressed that the safe use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes has been and remains a priority for Armenia.

“As a country with a functioning nuclear power plant, Armenia has adopted a transparent and open policy of safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy and will continue to strengthen and take appropriate measures to enhance and maintain nuclear and radiological safety. We highly appreciate the role and support that the IAEA has always shown to Armenia in the fulfillment of our obligations to ensure the safety standards of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant,” Papikyan said according to an Armenian government press release.

Armenia has implemented some forty programs within the framework of cooperation with the IAEA. Seven are now underway.

On the sidelines of his working visit to Austria, Papikyan also met with Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Li Yong. The minister stressed the importance of expanding the UNIDO’s involvement in Armenia's balanced development programs.
