Pashinyan and Iranian President Rouhani Meet in Yerevan; Discuss Expanding Relations

Welcoming Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Yerevan, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that his government attaches great importance to maintaining good relations with neighboring countries.

President Rouhani is in Armenia to attend a session of the Eurasian Economic Union’s Supreme Economic Council.

According to an Armenian government press release, Pashinyan recalled his “very impressive” visit to Iran in February and said that relations between Armenia and Iran are positive.

“Relations between our countries have been and continue to be good, and our position is that our relations with Iran should be as far as possible from geopolitical influences because we are immediate neighbors and have many common interests, and we must still work together for centuries and millennia,” Pashinyan said.

Pashinyan said that Armenia highly appreciates Iran's balanced position on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement issue.

President Rouhani thanked Prime Minister Pashinyan for the warm reception and echoed his sentiments about maintaining good relations with one’s neighbors.

“We attach great importance to developing and expanding relations with Armenia in all areas as a friend and neighbor. We are ready to continue working with your government to develop and implement new projects, expand gas and electricity project volumes. At the same time, we are ready to implement electricity generation projects in Armenia via gas, wind and solar. We are interested in the implementation of regional energy projects and infrastructure development,” Rouhani said

He added that Iran is also interested in cooperation with Armenia in the field of transport infrastructure, including various road construction projects.
