Armenian Minister and EU Delegation Head Discuss Radioactive Chemical Waste Disposal
Armenian Minister of Emergency Situations Felix Tsolakyan today received the newly appointed Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia Andrea Wiktorin.
Congratulating Wiktorin on her new post, Minister Tsolakyan mentioned the 230,000 Euro property program provided to the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
In addition, according to the Tsolakyan, work is underway to reduce natural and man-made disaster risk under the Comprehensive and Extended Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Armenia, and to deepen and expand cooperation in the field of emergency protection.
Tsolakyan, according to an Armenian government press release, said the destruction of existing radioactive chemical waste in Armenia is a priority issue for the government, but that regional realities complicate the matter.
He said there is a waste disposal plant in Isfahan, Iran, and that the Iranian side is ready to transfer the waste to it, but there is a financial problem.
International cooperation can be very useful in this regard, Tsolakyan said.
Andrea Wiktorin expressed her thanks for the kind and positive reception and reaffirmed the EU's readiness to support Armenia's development.
She said this position is reflected in the EU-Armenia Deep and Comprehensive Partnership Agreement, where the component of civil protection is very important.
