Armenian President and Head of Japan's Nuclear Regulatory Agency Discuss Safety Issues

As part of his working visit to Japan, Armenia President Armen Sarkissian today visited the Japan Nuclear Regulatory Agency and discussed nuclear energy issues with its president, Dr. Toyoshi Fuketa.

“There are not many countries in the world that have the know-how and knowledge of nuclear energy and its management, nuclear safety measures. Japan is one of those few countries,” President Sarkissian said, according to an Armenian government press release.

"The issue is very sensitive for our country. Armenia, like Japan, has a nuclear power plant, and the problem remains the same: how to manage nuclear fuel and nuclear waste,” Sarkissian said during the meeting with Fuketa.

Fuketa said his agency is constantly upgrading nuclear power plants and equipment to meet the risks, and their experience in the field can be instructive and useful.

He said that they are ready to share with other foreign partners the knowledge and lessons learned from the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi accident.
