Armenia: Domestic Violence Cases Registered by Human Rights Defender's Office Double in 2019

Armenia’s Human Rights Defender’s Office reports that it registered 100 domestic violence cases in 2019, twice the number registered in 2018.

Most of the complaints addressed to the Human Rights Defender in both years dealt with husbands abusing their wives.

The increase in the number of complaints is attributed to the office’s public awareness campaign last year highlighting how citizens can seek protection from domestic abuse via the law.

The campaign included a downloadable PSA video.

Guidelines on how to apply to the Human Rights Defender in cases of domestic violence were prepared in Armenian, English, Russian and French, and in braille.
