Bundestag President: "Germany Supports Reform Process in Armenia"

German Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble, during a meeting today in Berlin with visiting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, said that Germany is closely following developments in Armenia and that it supports the reform process undertaken by the Pashinyan government.

Pashinyan, according to an Armenian government press release, thanked Germany for ratifying the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement.

“Over the last year, Armenia has made great progress in all the rankings on democracy. Our government has another important goal, that of developing relations with Germany. Your country is of great interest to us as an established parliamentary state. As of 2018, Armenia has also shifted from a semi-presidential system to a parliamentary system,” Pashinyan said, highlighting the exchange of German experience in this regard to make the system more functional in Armenia.

Pashinyan stressed that the goal of his government is to make democracy in Armenia an independent, reliable judicial system as irreversible as it is in Germany.

During the meeting the two officials also referred to the development of cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union.

Schäuble expressed the hope that Armenia, via Pashinyan, will continue its efforts to promote relations between the two unions.
