Armenian Environment Minister and Japanese Ambassador to Armenia Discuss Lake Sevan, Climate Change

Armenian Minister of Environment Eric Grigoryan today, in Yerevan, met with Japanese Ambassador to Armenia Jun Yamada and discussed opportunities for further implementation of the Climate Change Innovation Facility developed by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia with the support of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

“Developed countries, through the introduction of an innovative financial mechanism drafted by Armenia, can support developing countries while fulfilling their commitments under the Paris Agreement. This mechanism can also be applied to co-operation between other developing and developed countries, by reducing the external debt of developing countries and by addressing these measures to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and increase adaptation,” Grigoryan said according to a statement released by his office.

Ambassador Yamada stressed the importance of large-scale efforts to combat climate change and said Japan is ready to study the document transmitted by the Ministry and to continue the discussions in the future.

The parties also discussed the issues confronting Lake Sevan, the Japanese experience in the field, and the opportunities to share such experience with Armenia.

Ambassador Yamada suggested reviewing opportunities for cooperation with Japanese specialists and Japanese foundations and the sharing of data from the International Lakes Environmental Committee.

Concluding the meeting, Grigoryan presented Ambassador Yamada with a book entitled Matenadaran, a Hidden Treasure, containing the best samples of Armenian manuscripts.
