Amenian President and Minister of Justice Discuss Proposed Constitutional Changes
Armenian President Armen Sarkissian and Minister of Justice Rustam Badasyan met today and discussed proposed constitutional changes, judicial reform and the fight against corruption in the country.
Sarkissian, according to a statement released by his office, said the constitution is a living and evolving legal document given the challenges of the time.
The president stressed that any amendment to the Constitution must be based on the principle of the rule of law and contribute to the normal development of the country.
Sarkissian stressed the importance of involving as many people as possible in the process of drafting the country's supreme law.
He said that his staff is ready to assist the ministry and the Expert Committee on Constitutional Reforms with its recommendations and resources.
Armenia is scheduled to hold a Constitutional Court referendum on April 5.
The referendum, backed by the government, seeks to modify Article 213 of the constitution and thus allow for the early termination of Constitutional Court Chairman Hrayr Tovmasyan and other court members.
Armenian PM Pashinyan argues that the current court does not represent the people.
