Little Mikayel Going Home After Successful Liver Transplant

One-year-old Mikayel is going home today.

The child, diagnosed with neonatal sclerosing cholangitis, a rare autosomal recessive form of severe liver disease with onset in infancy, underwent a successful liver transplant at Yerevan’s Arabkir Medical Center.

Mikayel was the first child diagnosed with the condition in Armenia.

Armenian surgeons performed the operation with a team from Minsk on March 13. Mikayel’s mother acted as a liver donor.

Ara Babloyan, Scientific Director of the Arabkir Medical Center, thanked the medical team, colleagues and Mikael's mother and the whole family for their patience, trust and boundless faith in the doctors.

"The mother gave the baby part of her liver, and the doctors gave her professional strength and dedication, giving him a second life in the truest sense of the word," Babloyan said in a statement released by the center.
