Yerevan: Project to Sort and Collect Commercial Cardboard in Full Swing

A newly opened unit of Yerevan’s Greening and Environmental Protection Community NGO is committed to solving one of the most important environmental issues in Yerevan, the sorting of commercial trash, this according to a statement released by the Yerevan Municipality.

600 businesses in Yerevan regularly sort cardboard, which makes up about 5% of Yerevan’s trash.

"It is the third month we’ve started working in earnest.  Now, we only collect cardboard. The goal is to minimize the entry of recyclable waste into the landfill, says Hayk Hovhannisyan, Head of the NGO’s Waste Sorting Department, adding that two to two and a half tons of cardboard are collected daily.

"We plan to open a temporary sorting station in Ajapnyak, where we will be able to sort the plastic. The waste we collect will create budget revenues, which will be used to purchase machinery and garbage bins,” says Hovhannisyan.
