Armenian President Thanks Lavrov for Karabakh Ceasefire

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met today in Yerevan and discussed the challenges Armenia now faces because of the recent war in Karabakh.

Sarkissian, according to a statement released by his office, thanked Lavrov and Russian President Putin for their efforts to draft a ceasefire agreement and for sending Russian peacekeepers to the region.

"It does not matter where Armenians live. They know that if it were not for your efforts and those of Vladimir Vladimirovich, we would continue to lose young lives today," said Sarkissian.

Sarkissian said the recent cessation of fighting must be sustained and that Armenia must somehow resolve this juncture of political instability.

Thanking Sarkissian for the meeting, Lavrov said his visit to Armenia, as part of the Russian interdepartmental delegation, seeks to strengthen Russian-Armenian relations in all spheres.

“For the first time, after so many agreements, the ceasefire is really working because there is a ceasefire monitoring mechanism. That’s to say the agreement of Azerbaijan and Armenia and the implementation of peacekeeping operations. They are already carrying out their operations, both by ensuring the cessation of hostilities and by providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Nagorno Karabakh,” Lavrov said.
