Vanadzor Wedding: Artsakh Refugees Meet and Tie the Knot

The recent war in Artsakhhas destroyed many lives, but has surprisingly brought people together as well.

Take the case of Haykaz and Ruzanna who were forced to move to Armenia from Artsakh due to the war.

Their wedding, in a Vanadzor orphanage, was kind of special.

For the last twelve years, Haykaz Hakobyan has lived in Ishkhanadzor, a community Artsakh’s Kashatagh District. He bred cattle there.

A Yerevan native, Mr. Hakobyan lived in Vanadzor for part of his life.  He quickly adapted to life in Artsakh and wants to return, saying life in Armenia isn’t for him.

Kashatagh has been returned to Azerbaijan under the November 9 ceasefire deal.

When the war started, he found refuge in the Vanadzor orphanage. It was there that he met Ruzanna, who had also been displaced from Artsakh.

"I met Ruzanna here. I fancied her Mr. Hakobyan says with a smile, adding that Ruzanna did not immediately agree to marry him, but in the end his persistence paid off.

He says the war has changed the lives of many. He wants to start a family and live happily.

Orphanage Director Lilia Abrahamyan enters the room and urges him to shave, otherwise the bride may not like him.

There is a strange but pleasant atmosphere in the orphanage building, some are decorating the table and others are looking for a bride and groom. The bride paces excitedly, refusing to talk to us, saying that she has already talked a lot.

Strangers also arrive, bringing food or other necessary items for the wedding.

The newlyweds say they will temporarily live at the orphanage until more permanent lodgings are secured.
