Armenian Foreign Ambassador and UNESCO Head Discuss Safeguarding Artsakh's Cultural Sites

Armenian Foreign Minister Ara Ayvazyan, now in France on a working visit, today discussed Azerbaijan’s deliberate destruction and desecration of Armenian cultural and historical sites in Artsakh with UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

Ayvazyan, according to a statement released by his office, decried Azerbaijani attempts to falsify the Armenian origins of such sites, arguing that such abuse violates the norms of international law.

Ayvazyan noted that in order to prevent a new cultural genocide by Azerbaijan, there is the need for a quick response from international organizations to hold the perpetrators accountable and to fully prevent such actions.

In this regard, the two exchanged views on the implementation of Azoulay’s proposal to send a UNESCO fact-finding mission to the region.
