EU-Armenia Partnership Council Discusses Karabakh, Covid-19 Issues
The third session of the European Union - Armenia Partnership Council took place on December 17 in Brussels, chaired by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell with the participation of European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi
. The Armenian delegation was headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Ara Ayvazyan.
The Partnership Council, according to a statement released by the European Union Delegation to Armenia, praised the implementation of Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which covers a wide range of cooperation in political, economic, trade and other fields. Other important thematic areas of EU-Armenia relations were also discussed. The EU reaffirmed its continued full commitment to the joint agenda, as well as its readiness to assist Armenia in overcoming the reform challenges.
The EU and Armenia also discussed the situation in Nagorno Karabakh, the role of the EU in supporting reconstruction and reconciliation since the end of hostilities on 10 November, as well as other regional issues.
A European Council statement on the meeting quoted Borrell as saying: “The EU stands ready to assume a role in supporting and shaping a durable settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, in close complementarity with the Minsk Group Co-Chairs. We are ready to use our peace-building and reconstruction tools to support this.”
The Partnership Council addressed the challenges posed by the COVID-19 epidemic, emphasizing the EU's support for Armenia's efforts to protect life, livelihoods, societies and the economy.
