Armenian Justice Minister Discusses Sector Reform with Ambassadors of Sweden, Poland, Lithuania

Armenian Minister of Justice Rustam Badasyan today, in Yerevan, received Swedish Ambassador to Armenia Patrik Svensson, Polish Ambassador to Armenia Pawel Cieplak, and Lithuanian Ambassador to Armenia Inga Stanytė-Toločkienė.

Badasyan, according to a statement released by his office, greeted the ambassadors at the Ministry of Justice, noting that the meeting was a good opportunity to discuss issues related to a proportionate response to fundamental human rights violations.

Ambassador Svensson thanked Badasyan for the meeting, noting that democracy and human rights are areas in which there is a great desire to develop cooperation in the coming years.

 "We support Armenia's post-velvet reforms aimed at protecting human rights, judicial reform, strengthening the rule of law and democracy," he said, adding that they are here to reaffirm their readiness to deepen cooperation.

According to the Ambassador Inga Stanytė-Toločkienė, the Ministry of Justice of Armenia is a pioneer in the implementation of reforms, noting that despite the tragedy and unfavorable events in 2020, it can be stated that Armenia has continued reforms. The Ambassador also congratulated Armenia on the progress made by the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index 2020.

"We are ready to intensify our cooperation in order to take the reforms that started two years ago with firm steps," the Lithuanian Ambassador stressed.

Ambassador Cieplak inquired about the work carried out by the anti-corruption bodies towards the establishment of Armenia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

During the meeting, issues related to the immediate return of prisoners, prompt and proportionate response to gross human rights violations were discussed.
