Seda Aronova, mother of Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronian, has hit back after recent media reports surface in Armenia that her son is planning to move to the U.S. and will compete under the American flag.

Aronova, in a Facebook post, also rejects claims that her son has “swallowed” Armenian money, calling the charges “inappropriate harassment.”

"I originally decided not to respond to the nationwide inappropriate and impudent harassment of my son, Levon Aronian, labelling him a national defector,” writes Aronova.

She writes that her son only received 200,000 drams as Armenian chess team captain and that the money was transferred to the Chess Federation of Armenia for the purpose of obtaining permission to use a special server, and that he wasn’t the only one using it.

“And for some reason, no one writes about the money donated by Levon. I will also refrain from disclosing the amount of money he regularly donates to charity,” Aranova writes.

She writes that Levon does charity work for Armenia and Artsakh, using his name and contacts to raise money for humanitarian purposes.

Regarding her son’s future moves, Aronova says that Levon is currently in Armenia and competing internationally under the Armenian flag.

“I should mention that Levon has received, and receives, many offers to play in the national teams of other countries with a thousand times more salary. So far, he has rejected   them. I cannot say what decision he will make this time, seeing this nationwide mental disorder,” Aronova writes, describing the current situation in Armenia.

The grandmaster’s mother charges that her son is being unjustly targeted by some circles for political interests.

“No one is to blame for your failed life. Stop criticizing the talented grandmaster, trying to present him as an apostate of the homeland and family. Please note that Levon’s participation in the chess life of Armenia was not for the aggrandizment of the President of the Federation Serzh Sargsyan. It was for the honor and reputation of Armenia in the world,” Aronova writes.
