Armenian President Doesn't Sign Directive to Sack Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian has not signed a proposal, sent to him by PM Nikol Pashinyan, to dismiss the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Onik Gasparyan.

On February 25, the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces issued a statement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the government.

Sarkissian, in a statement issued today, says he studied the proposal and reviewed the views of legal experts and concluded that the decree fundamentally contradicts the country’s constitution.

“The current situation is unprecedented, requires systemic and comprehensive solutions and cannot be resolved through frequent personnel changes, without taking into account the current situation in the country,” Sarkissian’s statement reads.

Soon after Sarkissian’s rejection to sign the Gasparyan dismissal into law, PM Pashinyan, in a Facebook post, wrote that he’ll send the decree to Sarkissian again.

"This decision does not contribute to resolving the situation at all. I am again sending the petition to dismiss the head of the General Staff to the President of the Republic, expecting that it will be signed in accordance with the established procedure. The rest, as we agreed yesterday, in the Republic Square,’ Pashinyan wrote.
