Armenian President Snubs Pashinyan's Proposal for New Chief of General Staff

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian has returned the PM Nikol Pashinyan’s proposal to appoint Artak Davtyan Chief of the General Staff of the RA Armed Forces.

A statement appearing on the presidential website says that Sarkissian returned the proposals with several objections but does not specify them.

Davtyan is Pashinyan’s choice to replace Onik Gasparyan as Chief of the General Staff.

Gasparyan is fighting his dismissal in the courts, arguing that the entire process was unconstitutional.

Davtyan headed the General Staff from May 2018 to June 2020.

Yesterday, the Armenian Defense Ministry said that Lieutenant-General Stepan Galstyan, one of Gasparyan’s deputies, will assume the duties of the General Staff chief pending a new appointment.
