Yerevan Court Drops “Seizure of State Power” Case Against Robert Kocharyan

Yerevan’s Court of General Jurisdiction today dropped the criminal case against former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan who was charged with the overthrowing of constitutional order during the post-election protests in Yerevan on March 1-2, 2008.

The court’s decision includes two other defendants similarly charged - then Armenian Deputy Minister of Defense Yuri Khachaturov and Seyran Ohanyan, who was Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces in March 2008.

Kocharyan, who served as Armenian president from April 1998-April 2008, was first arrested in the summer of 2018.  He was released from detention in June 2020 after paying a $4.1 million bail.

On March 29, Armenia’s Constitutional Court ruled that the Criminal Code article in question (Article 300.1) runs counter to two articles of the constitution.

The court also dropped the case against Armen Gevorgyan, a former Armenian deputy prime minister, who had been charged with illegally pressuring Constitutional Court Judge Valery Poghosyan in 2008 to validate the presidential election win of Serzh Sargsyan.

Kocharyan’s trial on bribery charges will continue. So too will the money laundering and bribery trial of Armen Gevorgyan.
