Armenian President Hopes Joe Biden Reaffirms Genocide Recognition Committment
Armenian President Armen Sarkissian, on the eve of the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, has sent letters to the leaders of over two dozen countries thanking them for showing solidarity with the Armenian people and for recognizing the 1915 Genocide.
Sarkissian’s office says he has sent letters to the presidents of France, Russia, the U.S., Germany, Italy, Argentina, Lebanon and Greece, among others. The Armenian President also sent a letter of thanks to Pope Francis.
In a letter to French President Emanuel Macron, President Sarkissian recalled Macron’s participation in Yerevan ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of the Genocide and his decree to mark April 24 as the Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide in France as proof of France's solidarity with Armenians and its commitment to universal values.
In a letter to U.S. President Joe Biden, President Sarkissian praised the 2019 decision of the two chambers of the US Congress, to pass resolutions recognizing the Genocide.
“We hope you will reaffirm your commitment to advancing historical justice and the prevention of new genocides,” Sarkissian wrote Biden.
In the letters, Sarkissian expressed confidence that the process of international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide will contribute to the prevention and elimination of genocide as a crime against humanity and impunity around the world.
