"We will never forget": Macron's Letter to Armenian President on 1915 Genocide Anniversary

French President Emmanuel Macron sent the following letter to Armenian President Armen Sarkissian on the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. (Unofficial translation).

Mr. President,

Dear Armen,

On the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, all my thoughts are on Armenia, which has suffered the hardships of history.

I am emotionally with the Armenian people, the refugees who escaped the genocide, the refugees who were once hosted by France, whose descendants created our country. We will never forget.

I would like to be with you on this day full of emotions and dignity. I have asked Mr. Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Secretary of State for Tourism and French Francophonie under the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Europe, to represent me during the Genocide commemoration ceremonies in Yerevan.

As I instructed, April 24, 2019 has been officially recognized as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day in France. Every day in France, despite the restrictions caused by the epidemic, that day included in our national calendar will be celebrated. This April 24, more than any other day, our two peoples are united around the same memory.

Accepting the truth, remembering the past, paying tribute to the dead, respecting the memory of the living is our duty to prevent amnesia, denial, lies. Committed to being with you throughout history, we are committed to the future, even as your country went through a deadly conflict in the region where too much blood was shed. It is necessary to create a new page of peace, prosperity and reconciliation. The struggle for justice, the truth that France has pressed together with you, will continue to advocate, will not stop, because it is not only the struggle of Armenians. It is the basis of the principle of fraternity of the French Republic.

On this day of sadness, but also of hope, when together we remember the terrible sufferings of the martyred people, France and Armenia is united by friendship and brotherhood. Please accept, Sir, the assurances of my highest respect.
