Yerevan's Opera and Ballet Theater Gets Acting Director Following Orbelian's Departure

Armenian Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Ara Khzmalyan yesterday introduced Karen Durgaryan, the newly appointed Acting Director of Armenia’s Spendiaryan National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet Theater, to the theater’s staff.

Durgaryan takes over from Constantine Orbelian who was appointed as Artistic Director in 2016. A year later, he was appointed Director General.

Orbelian was sacked as Director General of the Armenian National Academic Theatre in March 2019 by Armenia’s then Acting Minister of Culture Nazeni Gharibyan. Theater performers, angered by the dismissal, staged demonstrations in Yerevan.

Gharibyan argued at the time that Orbelian acted as the opera’s Artistic Director and could not legally serve as Director General at the same time.

Orbelian took the matter to court and was reinstated as Director General in February 2020.

In June of this year, the New York City Opera announced the appointment of Orbelian as its Music Director and Principal Conductor.
